Steps to use oxygen cylinder properly
It is very important to use the oxygen cylinder correctly, especially when it is necessary for the patient. Here we will discuss in detail the steps required to set up the oxygen cylinder.
Necessary tools
The tools required to set up the oxygen cylinder are:
Oxygen cylinder
Pressure regulator
Oxygen mask or nasal cannula
Humidifier bottle (if needed)
the wrench
Cylinder preparation
The first step is to prepare the cylinder. Place the cylinder in a stable location. Next, open the cylinder valve and slowly let out some oxygen to flush out any dirt or dust inside.
Pressure regulator connection
The pressure regulator controls the oxygen flow. Place it on the cylinder and make sure it fits properly. Tighten the regulator with a wrench, but do not overtighten.
Humidifier bottle connection (if required)
If needed, can use humidifier bottle. Fill the bottle with water and connect it to the outlet of the pressure regulator properly.
Connect oxygen mask or nasal cannula
Connect one end of the oxygen mask or nasal cannula to the outlet of the humidifier or directly to the outlet of the regulator. Fit it properly on the patient’s nose or mouth.
Adjust oxygen flow
First open the cylinder valve. Next, monitor the pressure through the gauge on the pressure regulator. Adjust the oxygen flow as required, eg 2-5 L/min, using the control knob on the regulator.
Ensuring oxygen supply
The mask or nasal cannula must fit the patient’s nose or mouth properly to ensure oxygen delivery. Make sure the patient is receiving oxygen properly and the flow is continuous.
Safety Guidelines
Safety is very important when using oxygen cylinders. Keep away from fire while using it and do not smoke near the cylinder. Close the cylinder valve when required.
By following these steps, you can properly set up the oxygen cylinder and use it safely.
